{"id":3627,"date":"2021-04-25T20:24:27","date_gmt":"2021-04-26T03:24:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.henselhosting.com\/blog\/?p=3627"},"modified":"2021-09-30T03:12:41","modified_gmt":"2021-09-30T10:12:41","slug":"wordpress-proposes-blocking-googles-floc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.henselhosting.com\/blog\/wordpress-proposes-blocking-googles-floc\/","title":{"rendered":"WordPress Proposes Blocking Google\u2019s FLoC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the recent announcement from WordPress, they state that they are treating Google&#8217;s new FLoC tracking technology as a security concern and may block it by default on WordPress sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&#8217;s Federated Learning of Cohorts (FLoC) received a lot of criticism concerning privacy. \u201cFLoC is meant to be a new way to make your browser do the profiling that third-party trackers used to do themselves: in this case, boiling down your recent browsing activity into a behavioral label, and then sharing it with websites and advertisers,\u201d the EFF said. \u201cThe technology will avoid the privacy risks of third-party cookies, but it will create new ones in the process. It may also exacerbate many of the worst non-privacy problems with behavioral ads, including discrimination and predatory targeting\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For website administrators who want to opt in to FLoC can do so by overriding the code. A few more lines of code would create an on\/off toggle option. WordPress also indicated that they might add a setting that allows admins to control whether FLoC is permitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Furthermore, a significant number of WordPress sites only update to minor versions. By back-porting, we can protect more sites and more visitors to those sites &#8212; and amplify the impact.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WordPress states that this block will be part of WordPress 5.8 and scheduled for release in July 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Options for website owners to opt out of FLoC:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A website owner can opt out by adding this header to their website.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>         Permissions-Policy: interest-cohort=()<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>There is already a plugin for WordPress that sends this header &gt;&gt; <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/disable-floc\/\">https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/disable-floc\/<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the recent announcement from WordPress, they state that they are treating Google&#8217;s new FLoC tracking technology as a security concern and may block it by default on WordPress sites.
